I don't know if this will be helpful, but when I first got my certified '01 wagon (at 40M miles) I was annoyed that no matter how I programmed it, the AC would come on full blast when starting the car. The dealer was puzzled by this, too, to the extent that he replaced the unit twice to no avail. "That's just the way it is," he finally said. However, I figured out a solution of sorts: If you set the temp to the lowest value, (58 degrees on my car) you should be able to program it closer to your liking, even if you still can't program an "off" start. If you try to program it while the display says "LO", it won't take.
