I feel your pain. That's what happened to me. The switch is indeed inside the latch mechanism, which is a stupid place for it. What's happening is your wagon always thinks the hatch is closed, even when you have it wide open. You can test this by turning on the car with the hatch open--the open door display should indicate that the hatch is open. I continued using my faulty latch and no hatch lights for several months, but then the opposite problem happened: the latch always thought the hatch was open. Thus, the hatch lights were ALWAYS on and the car thought the back was open when I was driving, which means it was constantly trying to lock the back. It was awful, and I was afraid it would drain the battery.
So, you could continue to use your hatch normally, as long as you don't mind having no lights. Or you'll have to get it replaced, which isn't cheap. The part alone is ~ $140. It cost me over $200 parts and labor. Good luck.
