The SAAB 9-5 is rated average in reliability by Consumer Reports. So, in general many Japanese cars are more reliable.
I do think SAABs are more expensive to maintain and repair. From my perspective the head gasket leaking and the DIC are two unusual problems for these cars.
Head gasket leaks have been noted for the 9000 on this board. And it has also been noted for the later model 9-5 cars as well. I think SAAB has had more than enough time to address this very expensive issue, and I am disappointed that it occurred with my car. I have taken other cars past the 100K mile mark without head gasket problems.
Any car that gets to 100K and above will have repairs. Some will be expensive. Other issues are simply maintenance.
The head gasket and DIC issues have been expensive repairs for me. I think a $30K car should not have head gasket problems if all the maintenance has been performed on schedule and if the oil changes were done more frequently than recommended.
The 9-5 is a safe, distinctive, and fun car to drive. It has a solid feel and good ergonomics. It is expensive to own relative to Japanese cars. Note that Japanese cars are becoming safer too.
We all have to make our choices based on our economic situation and the patience to get a car repaired repeatedly. Sometimes the fun of a great car is reduced by its poor reliability. On the other hand sometimes the fun of an average car is increased by its reliability.
