Brake Booster Leak - Input on my diagnosis

Last night, I had to put my 1999 Sedan (Early Gen. '99) through a nightmare brake scenario. A car panic stopped in front of me and I engaged my ABS hard for at least 7-8 seconds coming to a complete stop from 75MPH to miss the other car.
This morning, I am noticing a rapid thumping from from the brake booster at idle. If I touch the brake pedal, the noise stops. If I begin to accelerate, it also stops. If I am coasting along (any speed), I can feel the vibration of this thumping through the steering column, even at 50-65MPH (as long as I'm not touching the accelerator.)
Based on where the vibration/thumping is coming from, and other posts on the BBS, I believe my emergency stop damaged the diaphram in the booster and it developed a leak.
So my questions: 1) Does my diagnosis appear correct? 2) Why do the brakes appear to work better now than prior to the incident? 3) Is the booster replacement easy on this car, and does anyone have a procedure? 4) Any idea on how long I can go like this before total brake failure?
Thanks for the input!
