They should be willing to tell you what oil was used.
I suspect that a lot of shops will charge for 5 qts if they only use 4.2.---I think it may be called Revenue Enhancement, or it might well be that their computer program won't allow for less that a full quart.
In any case, a single load of semi-synthetic (or even non-synthetic) is most unlikely to cause catastrophic engine failure.
