(Interesting link indeed)
Did you ever notice how many SUV's go off the road in the winter. Aside from their notorious mediocre road handling, partly induced by their high center of gravity, their lousy 4 season tires are to blame. As noted in above thread, a FWD with snow tires is far superior to an AWD without them. Thread patterns will account for varying performances in different conditions but the crucial element of a good winter tire is it's soft rubber because it gives it superior traction on cold and icy surfaces. Summer or 4season tires loose their grip in colder weather so they are dangerous, even if you don't drive in deep snow. On the other hand, if you wish to extend the life of your winter tires, put them on late in the Fall and take them off early in the Spring as their soft rubber will literally melt away as the asphalt get's warmer. A dramatic example of this are the rain tires in formula racing. Notice how fast they disintegrate as the pavement dries up.
Happy winter driving (Saabs ARE great in snow).
