I just tried out Saab OE pads for the first time. Great performance, nice and quite, but yes, they do make a mess. If you think THOSE are dirty, try Textar sometime (German brand, good pad but FILTHY) on an 88 9KS with the old 24 spoke wheels. I've found the best way to clean is Simple Green and a soft brush.
I'm running Metalmasters on my 1992 9KT and they run very clean. I would only run them with a new set of rotors, the 'word on the street' and my experience with similarly compounded pads is they don't seat in on used rotors very well, and will have a tendency to be noisy if not broken in properly with a fresh rotor surface. You *can* machine the rotors but it seems like they become prone to warping once machined.
