Importance of Tire Load Ratings

It's time to replace my OEM Michelin Primacy tires (which miraculously survived 40k miles). I was pretty much set on putting on the Pirelli Nero M+S tires that almost everybody has had a good experience with. The review on tirerack are also very positive.
However, the load rating is lower than the manufacturer's spec in the manual. (91W, vs. 94W). I have tried researching the significance of this, and the most I can come up with is that the tire is not designed to hold as great a load. In this case, it is roughly 100-150lbs.
Given all the great reviews on this tire for this car, does a lower load rating really matter that much? Approximately 80-90% of my driving time is with just me as the driver, and nothing in the trunk.
What things should I keep in mind if I go on a road trip with a car full of friends?
Also, if each tire can hold about 100-150lbs less, would the total load reduction be 400-600lbs? That seems like quite a bit.
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.
