tried to fix the SID, now it's worse!

Being the handy sort, I read up on fixing the SID on my '02 Aero. Removing the stereo and SID (actually SID2 according to the label) was easy enough, as was disassembling the unit. I see where the ribbon meets the printed circuit board, and I used the end of a small hobby paint brush to press the connection. Then I put a narrow and thin strip of foam along the connection to offer some light constant pressure to keep the connection firm.
Reinstall was a snap, but some pixels still were out at the far right hand side, so I did the fix again. Unfortunately, the results now are worse than before my attempted fix. The first time digit is off, and about 25% of the right hand 1/3 of the date portion is out, in addition to a HORIZONTAL dead spot. Geez, I think I f**ked it up.
Before I spend the money on either buying one that works or sending it out for the fix, can anyone offer any advice? Should I heat up the tip of a screwdriver with a heat gun and rub the connection? Should I use a soldering iron? Should I punch myself and pony up the cash?
