I've never tried this, but everything I've read says it should work. When you say you tried swapping the CD heads, what are you referring to? Without a Tech II, you can't swap the whole head unit. However, if you disassemble the head unit, remove the CD player module, replace it with a working one, and reinstall, everything should still be fine assuming everything else about your original headunit worked. The communication system in the 9-5 is only concerned with being 'married' to the headunit's mainboard, not the individual components (like the radio, CD player, and tape deck).
