I've done a lot of keyword searching here for my specific problem--I find some similar symptoms, but no idea what the resolution was for those cases. So . . .
The car: '99 SE LPT, 4 SP AUTO, 68k miles.
On the way to work this am, I noticed two instances of rough deceleration downshifting--didn't think much of it.
On the way home (stop and go traffic on the highway), I noticed many rough instances of upshifting from 2 -> 3. Nothing horrible sounding or feeling, just abnormal.
Exit expressway--surface street commute is about 2 miles from the exit to home. It clunks from 2 -> 3 a few times. about 5 blocks from home after trying to accelerate from a stop sign, car shudders a bit at take off, then smooths out.
Then, the transmission completely disengages. I coasted for about 1/2 block, put it in park, checked the transmission fluid--no issues. Get back in, attempt to put in any or all gears, including reverse. No transmission engagement whatsoever--just a reving enging as if it were in neutral.
Turn car off, call wife to pick me up. Realize that I am only 3 blocks from home, call wife again, tell her i am stupid, will walk home. Start car, put in drive, and transmission engages and car drives as per normal. Blew two stop signs--too scared to stop. Pull in driveway.
Check trans fluid again, full (duh). Look under car--no signs of fluid leakage.
Fluid is rather clear with a vague pink tint. It is certainly not dirty. It does, however, smell a bit like burnt plastic (methinks this is bad). I have not replaced the trans fluid, but have had all services done through 60k miles at the dealer (car was CPO).
Does this sound like a software problem? Throttle body problem? Really expensive transmission replacement/rebuild problem?
It should be worth noting that I have had a love/hate relationship since purchasing this car 4+ years ago as a CPO with 42K miles. The following laundry list of repairs have been done under warranty since I purchased:
* Fuel pump
* 3,562 dashboard light bulbs
* Turbo
* Steering column
* ENTIRE ENGINE REPLACEMENT (55k miles)
* DI cassette
* Turbo #2
* A/C compressor
I just had the rear rotors, pads and rear shocks (Bilstein HD's thanks to recommendations from this site) replaced last weekend.
I have never, ever had the transmission so much as studder the entire time I have owned the car--i always thought that regarless of the many problems I have had, at least it had a solid, bulletproof transmission.
This latest incident has saddened me, because I have been saving for a Boxter, and planned to use the 9-5 as my bad weather/kid hauler.
Anybody had these symptoms that a fluid replacement, etc. has fixed? Anyone have anything positive to say regarding my transmission's prognosis?
Regards,
Scott
