You'll probably get some more comprehensive responses, but I'll provide my own experience on a '98 900 SE when I removed the oil pan (while changing the clutch). Removing the oil pan is easy, only a dozen or so bolts. If it is oil sludge, I'd guess one might want to replace the oil pick-up because the screen would be difficult to clean. There's also an O-ring for that tube and a need for sealant for the reinstalling the pan--I used Permatex Hylomar.
The tricky part of the job was removing the sub-frame and exhaust system parts that get in the way of removing the oil pan and have to be removed first. I believe that the 9-5 is similar in that exhaust and subframe must be removed--that's the part to investigate. Be sure to mark the sub-frame before removal in order to help get it back in the same spot. Good luck.
