I got to the parking lot where she'd pulled in. A little oil was on the ground (see photo), the whole underside of the front of the car was thoroughly soaked with fresh oil. I took my wife and daughter home and came back with tools and more oil. I was able to tighten the filter up a LOT more at this point. I have changed oil plenty of times and have never been fooled by the tightness of the filter till this time. With the filter retighened, the car took 4 quarts. What was on the ground, was probably the last drippings the car had.
I started the car up, and it was fine. No warning lights, normal sounding and functioning engine. I fired up my laptop and checked the obd-II with elmscan, and nothing bad logged or reported there. Checked the oil, and it looked fine. Car works great now, except for some lingering odor from the oil being splattered on the cat, downpipe, and other warm parts.
I'm feeling someone up above spared me from serious disaster today. If my wife had driven another mile, the engine would have been warmed up and bone dry!
Moral of the story: Keep enough oil around for two oil changes instead of one, remind others who you share a car with that it must be stopped immediately in case of such problems, keep your cool till you know the extent or resolution of the problem.
