I would trust the GPS. If you drive at a steady state, depending on the GPS, the spped of the processor, the number of satellites, etc. It should lock in and provide a very accurate representation of your speed. If you stop, the GPS may still show forward movement until it 'catches up'.
I have a portable GPS in my Saab 9-5, and the GPS shows about 3 mph faster than the speedometer. I also travel a lot and rent cars, and in some cars it is a dead match, and others it is off by less than 1 mph. So I would agree with DEAN that the speedo is not accurate to your exact speed.
BTW, the GPS I am using is the MIO c310x which many stores have been using as a cheap special. Pretty good considering the price.
