I too like that feature but hate that I have to push the button to get it to work. In an old BMW I had ('90 750 il), as long as the mirror setting button was not set to the right side, as soon as the car was put into reverse the mirror went down -- then returned as soon as the car went out of reverse. Since when parking you usually keep one hand on the shifter and one on the wheel -- to have to take my hand off the wheel to push the button is a nuisance, particularly here in NYC where tight spots require much manuevering (forward and reverse) before you get the car parked just right! So more often than not I don't even use it.
But IMO the back window visibility is only good for traffic (and watching for police). For parking/backing up I use the side views almost exclusively. I think I could get to like the parking assist (not that I have it or ever even tried it) -- especially since no matter how low your rear end, from the back window or side views you'll never see the kid on the tricycle immediately behind you.
