Price, equipment, time... Posted by Johnson [Email] (#3237) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Johnson) on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 16:39:03 In Reply to: Re: I'm interested, Dano in Texas [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 29 Jan 2007 14:59:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I will start with time, it took me 30-45 min. i am quite savvy with that type of stuff, if you are not i would give myself an hour per unit.
process: i removed the whole acc, radio, sid, and radio cage, to give myself plenty of room to work and plenty of light. i wired the system to the adaptor on my table before going out to the car, so i could just go out and plug it in. i bought the adaptor for the plug from the dealership, and it came with a wiring diagram, and the kit i used came with a diagram as well making it very easy to put the two together. the only hard cable was the mic, as it is a round cable, i realized that the middle wire was positive and the outer mesh was the ground wire. also I took one of the banks out where a button on the dash would go, put it in a clamp and sawed a small nitch it in, just big enough for the wire to fit through, gives it a clean finished look.
Equipment:
I work for verizon wireless (the company that supplies the mins for your onstar), so i get sic discounts on stuff and so far the only hands free kit they sell is the motorola (BT850CK) HF850. it retails at about $170. It uses the voice recognition in your phone, not in the device its self, and it does not have caller id. being that i paid next to nothing for it i did not care, i liked the voice prompts on my phone, an selected different ring tones for each person, or group of people, and even of your phone is on silent, it will play your ring tone of choice over the car speakers, i thought that was better than having a tiny lcd screen to have to look at while driving. I have used it with several phones from different makes, samsung, lg, and motorola. just a side note, i hate the razr. it is a crap phone (mind you i work tech support for a cell phone company) and i really don't like its voice dial. I am not a big fan of the samsungs either. i have used it with the lg 8100, 8300, 8500(chocolate), all of which have worked flawlessly, and my motorola "Q" which i also really like the voice dial on. so basically, it is important to find a phone that you really like the voice dial on, because if you don't, it will be a worthless setup for you. some other equipment needed; a hands free phone adaptor, purchased at dealer, maybe 12-15 dollars. and some way to keep the wires together, i used electrical tape, small wire twists purchased at radioshack would have been a better idea, but it was closed and i already had the tape.
any other questions feel free to ask!
