Not your exact cars, but close... (Longish) Posted by Wil W [Email] (#1148) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Wil W) on Thu, 1 Feb 2007 15:14:54 In Reply to: 9-5 wagon vs. BMW 525it wagon, brick8, Thu, 1 Feb 2007 13:22:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced my 535i sedan fully loaded (5spd, 150K ) with an '02 9-5 Aero Wagon fully loaded (Auto, 47K).
BMW was purchased used for $10K in 2001, sold for $7.5K in 2005
Aero Wagon purchased for $22K in 2005, CPO w/ 45K miles
I loved my 535i and many advised me to keep both but I couldn't justify it. But here was my rationale, it may be different due to sedan vs. wagon. Also, wanted a Auto over stick ease of driving. The other cars is a '89 SPG that is the "go-kart".
'92 535i sedan
Pros:
great power, handling a very solid feel, well built, great highway cruiser, substantial feeling in it and while driving. Overall just an awesome feeling car
Cons:
poor MPG (16-17 mixed), limited space: rear seats and trunk, difficult for older people get in/out of (Parents & in-laws), questionable for MN winter (Rwd), 5 spd was very heavy (esp for her, she didn't like driving it in city/traffic), feels like a big car, dated safety equipment (SRS light was on) and too much attention (black/black tinted w/ BMW BBS rims).
'02 9-5 Aero Wagon
Pros:
better MPG (20-21 mixed) quicker/faster, more nimble and agile, feels more maneuverable, much more usable space, better seats, better/updated safety equipment, great 5sp auto, even better highway cruiser, easier for older people, 3 yrs warranty (remainder of factory + CPO) & 2% financing, and importantly Stealthy.
Cons:
$15K difference, depreciation, less solid feel overall, lighter steering, isn't as "Classy" as a BMW sedan.
Conclusion:
Overall both are great. We wanted better gas mileage, more space, an auto, updated safety, and the CPO was bonus. The BMW was/is a great car, but the Aero is a great replacement. Factoring in repairs and depreciation for us, the 15K hit at 2% financing wasn't too bad.
I'm happy with the Aero wagon and only on occasion wish I still had the BMW. Sorry for the length, but I had pretty direct experience with replacing a 5-series w/ a 9-5. (Pic of my former 535i, and I'll post my wagon in next thread.)
My 2 cents.
