Ashtray/storage compartment...remove?

I'm trying to remove one of the rotary seat warmer switches on my 2002 Aero to replace a bulb. Safest way, it seems to me, is to remove the molded plastic interior of the storage compartment area below the switches (where I believe the ashtray used to be located) and then push out the switch from behind using my fingers. But I cannot remove it. In the interior of the compartment there are two small rectangular holes, one on each side. I presume these might be anchors for some sort of extractor, but when hook a bent rod into these holes and pull on it, the insert won't budge. Anybody out there done this?
