JL, pulling the tensioner and checking the stretch is surely the way to go , and you can look at the guide in the valve cover to see if that is scored, it is easily replaced. That is the only guide visible. 38k is surely low mileage to be encountering any internal difficulties, unless oil changes were botched. As an fyi, the noise the chain(s) make when stretched is unmistakable, and as I have noted before, the balance shaft chain is actually noisier. Failure of either chain would be catastrophic to engine internals. Good luck - Tom S.
