That was one of the first things I thought about. I've seen them go bad fairly quickly as well. Usually when they fail, however, they lock in one position (I'm not sure what the failure mode is on SAAB t'stats). If the t'stat was locked open I would not expect to see the engine warming up under any conditions in this weather. As mentioned, in stop-and-go or mixed driving, the car heats normally and regulates properly.
Nonetheless, I would ordinarily pull it just to be sure. The problem is that the temperature here is not exactly conducive to digging in and yanking the t'stat without losing a finger or two to frostbite, and I don't have a heated indoor workspace available.
I think I need to do a little checking of the temps going in and out of the radiator. If the top hose is plenty hot and the bottom is dead cold after a highway drive, I'll know it's airflow related (too much cooling). I didn't notice this at all last year, only since going with the more efficient G-05 coolant this summer.
