Muffler has a big hole in it Posted by NP [Email] (#244) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NP) on Tue, 20 Feb 2007 22:18:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I took my 2000 9-5 (4 cyl.) in for an oil change and the mechanic pointed out that the whole muffler is rusting through. Sure enough, there are actually icicles hanging down from the hole in the outer casing around the muffler. I had heard that the 9-5 exhaust had an unusual set-up, but the mechanic went on and on about how the muffler is really expensive to replace and that there aren't any aftermarket alternatives. He estimated $600.
I suppose if it's bad enough that the casing around the muffler and the muffler itself are both rusted, there's bound to be a fair amount needing to be replaced. What kind of options do I have? I searched the board, and some people once recommended Remus, but it sounds like that has been discontinued. If I'm going to have to shell out a bunch for repairs, I'd at least like to get a dependable, attractive exhaust system. I'm not into coffee can mufflers, but I've always like the dual-pipe look over the single oval.
Has anyone recently replaced a muffler? What kind of costs did you encounter?
Thanks!
