The workshop manuals for Trionic 7 clearly states that algorithms will not request a torque that will result in a speed above 240 or 250km/h.
Note that Trionic 7 tries to produce a certain torgue based on the position of the accelerator and a number of other inputs. Some of the inputs are vehicle speed, engine rpm, engine temperature, engine knocking, brake pedal pushed, cruise control, traction control, selected gear for manual gearbox, limit request from automatic gearbox during gear change, et.al.
What limits speed?
The specs given by Saab indicates that all models except the Aero are limited by drag.
The Aero is limited by the speed limit of 240 or 250km/h.
A rev limit of 6000 rpm gives a speed of about 270km/h at rpm limit, so no standard 9-5 has its speed limited due to the rev limit.
The modified software in my 9-5 has had its speed limit moved to 280km/h and the rev limit moved to 6400rpm. The speed at rev limit for my 9-5 is therefore somewhere near 285km/h in fifth gear. I have not tested if drag, rev, or speed sets the speed limit for my car.
