I had a Ford Taurus years ago that did the same thing.
The vent system in the tank must be malfunctioning and creating backpressure, which triggers the shutoff in the filler nozzel, (which I'm sure you figured out).
I wonder if you placed a plastic drinking straw inside the filler neck??? Would it fit with the gas dispenser?
Hopefully someone else can chime in hear with a suggestion because I would think the only solution would be tank replacement.
