I am in the process of trying to do this engine swap with a '99 Saab 9-5 3L V6 with a Saturn Vue 2002 L81 6 cyl with 70,000 miles. The Saab has 109,000 on it. The guy I bought the car from swore that it will work. He said he knows someone who had already done the swap.
I picked the motor up on Sunday and at first glance it looked very different. After starting to strip it down sure enough it looks close if not identical. The Saturn motor uses a funky oil cartridge system which I was concerned about at first. Sure enough the Saab just has a big plug where this goes. There are some sensor points that seem different but again the Saab motor has plugs in these. I will strip the motor down and only keep the head and block from the Saturn as everthing else seems in good shape. This is a weekend project at another location so I don't get to work on the car as much as I'd like.
I definitely don't have any technical data to give you but I have jumped in head first and at this point I have been surprisingly pleased with the results. I still need to pull the motor out of the Saab and put them side by side on engine stands to swap parts.
I am curious about timing belts, tensioners, water pump etc(best place to buy, cheapest prices) so if you can help in that area I would appreciate it. I also wonderful if the turbo needs to be replaced base on mileage.
One of the tensioners in the motor must have seized because the timing belt has been heated and deteriorated causing it to jump teeth. The v6 doesn't have much extra room in the engine bay so I am trying to change as much of the important stuff before I put it back in the car.
The car is cosmetically in wonderful shap so if I pull this off at the prices I paid I will be blown away!
