Open manifold port? Question for Saab Mechanic

I just changed plugs on a '99 V6 and noticed what looks like an aluminum manifold type piece opening at the lower back center of the engine with nothing attached to it. It is right next to the exhaust manifold and has a flat surface (facing upward) with threaded holes like something should be attached to it. There are a couple of 1" hoses running along the firewall right above it. There is a 1.5" or so square duct opening into this manifold that routes down into I don't know what. Really looks like something should be attached here, but nothing is. I very recently had an alternator replaced by my local dealer and am wondering did they leave something off? Car runs fine. Only thing I've noticed since the alt change is an audible while during higher RPM's. I did notice the back side of the alternator has a plastic housing that seems molded to take a hose or something but nothing is attached. I don't think these are related but figured I'd mention. Thanks in advance.
