NGK spark plugs are the best for any car but especially SAAB. SAAB uses technology called "ion flow" to detect engine knock and other combustion defects in individual cylinders. Spark plug electrodes are used for this purpose and that's why you MUST use the specific spark plug specified in the manual.
Fire your mechanic. If he does not know something this basic, he obviously has little competence required to work on SAABs.
