I've been looking at an '03 linear wagon to replace my totaled '01 9-3. I took the car to an independent shop for inspection, and got the following feedback:

- Tranny fluid (auto) is black. Recommend a couple drain/refill cycles over time to correct.
- Oil seepage from timing chain cover. Tech says he sees this commonly in 2.3 motors, '99 to '02. I've also read here that this may be a misdiagnosed head gasket leak.
- A couple smaller items. SID, rear window washer, battery
- Needs 60k service with fluids flushed, etc.

Otherwise the car drives nicely, is well maintained, good records, 5k oil changes, etc.

I'm inclined to pass on this car and keep searching for a better example, but it seems the timing cover and tranny fluid issues may be common. I was hoping for a CPO, but can't get anything close to a reasonable deal locally.

Think I should take the time & cash to clean this one up, or keep looking?
