Remember that you have a FWD car, so you will _have_ to put on a traction aid regardless of what kind of tires you have mounted, when you see the sign "Chains Required". There is no getting around that fact. Driving in the snow with the OEM summer tires would be very risky, regardless of what kind of traction aid you installed.
I recommend that you purchase a set of high performance All Seasons....you should be able to get something for your OEM tires, as crappy as they are ;) Then buy a set of Spikes-Spiders. They are expensive, but seem to work well, from what I have read. They WILL work on your 17 inch tires, since they do not wrap around the inside of the sidewalls. Online they are around $300 USD. I saw them at a Volvo dealer for $389 installed. Saturn dealers also sell them, though I am not sure you would find the larger size you need.
I am interested in these also for my Aero. If you buy a set, please post a test report after you use them.
