suggestion: check oil sludge build up

I bought the used 2003 9-5 2.3 Linear 61k mi a month ago. I want to make sure my car in problem free condition.
When I make an apppointment at the dealer and request to remove and clean the oil pan and pickup screen ($600), the service dept call me back and he suggested that I can check the valve cover ($200) first is the cheaper way. If it looks ok, I don't need to clean the oil pan and pickup screen. Do you agree? If sludge occur, I need to do both anyway.
Do you think I should check the valve cover first or just clean the oil pan and pickup screen no matter what?
Thanks!
