odd smell on startup plus engine light

I have a 2000 SE Wagon (V6) that's emitting an odd smell on startup - smells like turpentine or paint thinner (I don't believe it's coolant, but I could be wrong) - also, the engine light is coming on.
My wife came in the house complaining about rough idle and car running slow (might have entered "limp-home" mode, but I wasn't there). I went out to take a look, started the car fine and that's when my wife noticed the smell (she also reported smoke, but it was gone when I looked - must've been just a puff) - it idled a bit roughly, but not terribly so - tried again after an hour or so and the smell was there, but it was running smoothly (perhaps even better than normal)
Coolant level is fine - I didn't have a chance to look for milky oil before it got dark - the car has always run a bit rich on startup (it's not our main vehicle and tends to sit), but it's always smelled like a car running rich (gas fumes, not paint thinner)
I suspect that it's either
1. I don't know what coolant smells like coming out of the tailpipe and it is a head gasket problem
2. we've got a different gas formulation (BP, btw) that smells differently when running rich and the engine light is from a sensor reacting differently to the gas (grasping at straws here)
#1 is probably more likely
anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
also, anyone know what a dealer generally charges to replace a head gasket? (a range will be fine)
thanks
