I have a Thule "pod" type carrier. A medium sized one ( I think the "adventurer"). I use it for ski trips and put the skis and ski poles and light luggage in it. It is as aerodynamic as car top carriers come but you can definitely feel and hear that you have a large item on top of the car. Remember you dont want to overload it with heavy items as it may change the center of gravity of the car. The car top carriers work fine if you need the extra capacity but dont expect the car to sound and fell the same. There will be some wind noise and some noticeable handling issues in windy travel. I do not limit my speed because I have a roof top carrier. But I do keep my speed less then 75 and usually drive 65 to 70 anyway whether I have the carrier or not.
