I am fortunate in having a local independent mechanic who I can trust and who doesn't charge an arm and a leg to do the work.
It turns out that the baffle actually broke the mount of the fuel pump/sending unit assembly, so I had to have it replaced (he gave me back the unit and the baffle in case there's a recall in the future so I can prove it!). I'm also lucky that he has good access to used parts -- he was able to locate a good used unit at a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Parts and labour came to $322. Not bad in light of the fact that I would likely have ordered a new one at $600 and still have had to do the work myself.
I strongly recommend to anyone experiencing erratic readings on their fuel gauge that you get the problem corrected immediately, before the baffle breaks your fuel pump/sending unit!
