look at the vehicle's hardware. The nuts and bolts will show the rust. As a whole, the northern cars will show salt corrosion by having rusty hardware. This isn't a huge issue, unless you perform your own vehicle maintenance. Replacing drivetrain, brake, and some engine components can be a real pain in the neck when the bolts have rusted.
Usually, you will be able to tell if the vehicle was used as a winter driver by looking at the rear tag holder. It is the first piece that shows rust. The brake calipers will also show surface rust. The largest problem that the northern cars will have is exhaust rust. The salt splashing onto the undercarriage, will literally make the exhaust disintegrate over time. I'm not saying that northern cars are problematic, but the Long, Wet, Salty winters are very hard on cars. Even the most well made cars will have some small setbacks due to corrosion.
Other than the added difficulty of maintenance on the cars, the only other problem that I see is the salt or sandblasting of the nose of the car.
