...living in a rural area (Maine), it would not take very long for word to get out quickly if a mechanic was taking their sweet time on what would otherwise be routine jobs.
"Back in the day", there was a local garage that I had do most of the work on my cars, he charged actual time - and if it took him longer because something was rusted on, I did pay for that, willingly. Because over the decade or so that he worked on my cars (prior to his retirement), the net result was I paid less in labor costs than by following the "book rate".
The truth is that I really like the dealership where I have bought my Saabs and had them serviced - and the other reality is that this is kind of like oil and tire discussions - they come around frequently and are met with strong opinions on both sides.
Bottom line for me is that I like my car and will continue to grumble when it needs services, but that's just my curmudgeon side coming out...
...now it's time for me to go change the air in my tires. Gotta get rid of that summer air and get some good fall air into them.
