You'll probably get the best "real" deal with your credit union. Frequently, when dealers offer a low rate on the financing, they make up for it by jacking up the price to compensate, eliminating incentives, or including additional fees, etc.

It may be difficult to make a real comparison because dealers often want to know first whether you are planning to finance with them or with an outside source, and than adjust their negotiating accordingly. Try to get the price settled first before discussing financing.

Before signing, be sure to read the fine print, and find out both what the monthly payments will be and the total that you're going to pay over the duration of the loan including all fees, etc.

Also, check with your credit union to see if they have a car buying service. You decide what car you want, then let the service do the dickering. Because they have lots of experience, they can often do better than an individual, even considering the fee that they charge.
