You need a T-30 torx for the screws.
The one that comes in the 9-5 kit with the slide on plactic handle is crappy.
I had this same experence when I had a 2000 9-3. The screws were on tight enough the torx in the tool kit wouldn't give me enough leverage to loosen them. The slide on plastic handle did not grip the tool tight enough to work.
Get a torx socket set, or better torx screwdrivers to use for this. They sell both at Sears. You can get the loose T-30 socket or the screwdriver.
