Matt:
First, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
Now, about the dead car.
1. Get it jumped and started. Odds are that it is only the battery; but, don't buy a battery until you're sure that the battery is dead because it died....it may be the alternator that has fallen down on the job. If the car started OK and then was pretty dead as you described it's probably the battery.
2. Assuming that you have the car started OK....drive to your indy (call in advance to make sure he has a battery for you).
3. The indy can test the battery and finalize the diagnoses that it is indeed the battery. A battery will run $75 - $125.
4. AND...this is big....the indy can check the alternator output to make sure that it's OK. Note that it's very unusual for a battery and an alternator to go at the same time.
5. AND...more good stuff....your indy can give you an opinion as to whether you should plan to replace the voltage regulator soon. It's attached to the alternator and contains the brushes that wear out over time. I used to replace mine every 100K miles as a preventive measure, probably 20K - 50K miles too soon.
The above steps are ones you can do to take care of the car yourself.
Good luck Matt.
