Until it won't go.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 18:10:17 In Reply to: Average clutch life........., Tim, Mon, 17 Dec 2007 16:39:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you drive in the city you don't have to use 4th.......Slipping clutches can be nursed a long way. Be aware of any RPM float in 4th and 5th on hills. Gear multiplication makes the torque load much less in the lower gears so the clutch will slip in higher gears under the load of the wind from speed or a hill. Can you make it "float", no hook up, with a heavy shift into 5th? Slip will occur at 2,000-3,000 rpms, in the fat part of the torque band. Stab the clutch going up a good hill in 5th with a heavy throttle just enough to break it loose. Does it hook back up or float a little?
These are the warning signs, and that burnt clutch/brake smell after you drive. If you can feel it coming you might nurse it a long way. You won't do any more damage by wearing it completely out. The clutch eventually might not disengage. Are you local enough or adverse to a tow being in the cards at perhaps an inconvenient time or could you deal with it for another 6 mos to 4 years?
If you can't feel these kind of things maybe why you only go 40k ish between clutches.
Letting the clutch out from neutral is another wear cycle in an admittedly already busy shift pattern from city driving.
