The Torsen system is supposed to be much better than the Haldex system. According to the people at http://www.audiworld.com, you get haldex if your engine is mounted one way and torsen if it's mounted another way. Haldex is basically a front wheel drive system that sends power to the rear wheels when slip is detected. See http://www.haldex.com. There's going to be a time lag. The torsen system is completely mechanical (gears in a differential). There's very little or any delay, and Audi can set and probably has the car so that the normal operation is 50% power to the front and 50% power to the rear. The Torsen can send something like 80% to one side (which is generally connected to the front/rear axles/wheels, although a Hummer has three torsen differentials) and be made to start at less than 50% I believe (see http://www.torsen.com).

Personally, I think that Audi/VW does a disservice to people by calling their awd systems by one name (quattro or 4motion), when there are really two systems. The uninformed consumer doesn't know the difference, but there are differences in handling.

I am of the opinion that, if you drive the speed limit, you rarely need awd. However, I'd rather have awd. In my viggen, when I'm stuck on a hill that's wet or snowy, I have to modulate the throttle quite a bit or let TCS interfere or else I'll spin the front wheels. AWD would help here. It would also help the car keep glued to the road (if you speed -- the speed limit here is 25 mph, and you really don't need awd to hit 25mph; I can easily double the speed limit in my fwd, and that's counting turns).

Personally, I wouldn't like to buy a haldex-type system and I'd rather have a torsen-type system. However, more cars are coming out with haldex now, probably due to space requirements. I think that a haldex system is smaller and more configurable and can be electronically controlled. Unfortunately, electronic control is all the rage. I say unfortunately because they'll soon become a time when many cars simply will not let you turn their control systems off.
