This happened to me on the Saturday before Christmas. I have a 1999 9-3.

I phoned Saab Roadside Assistance, and they could not help. They said they could disconnect the battery if I wanted, or tow me to a dealer -- neither of which I wanted. It was Saturday afternoon and I was in Southern California. All local dealer repair shops were closed. Roadside Assistance determined that a Seattle dealership repair shop was open and connected me. The guy there said that I had to take it to a dealer for repair -- that if jiggling the transmission didn't work, nothing that I could do would fix it.

I took it to my local dealer on the morning of Christmas eve. They fixed it. It took about 90 minutes and they said that the ignition lock was full of gunk. It just needed to be cleaned out, which they did under warranty. (I have not spilled anything in the ignition, so this must be from 3-years of normal use. This is just another example of why I think the between-the-seats ignition is a bad design.)

As you are probably aware, the remote will not work when the key is in the ignition. I used my spare key to manually lock the doors, and placed a jacket between the front seats to cover the key-in-the-ignition.
