Check out my mechanic's webpage on a simple oil spot test: http://www.schleeter.com/test/index.htm. I'd ask your Saab mechanic to do it, and if he doesn't have the test papers, you can order them online. Anyway, the test can be quite revealing. If you still want more information, and you know where the car was located (sounds like Carfax told you that), then call up the local Saab dealers with the VIN number; maybe they can tell you what services were done. In my experience, though, most people don't maintain cars as well as they used to. It doesn't help that Saab recommended such long 15k mile oil change intervals. If the owner didn't bother to save the receipts, doesn't it seem doubtful he or she was not changing the oil every 3 to 5k miles? I think you can also make some guesses about maintenance from the interior and exterior condition of the car. In some cars, you can just tell the owner never vacuumed or really cleaned the seats. Maybe you can see that the exterior has been similarly neglected (ie, never waxed). All these things together, I think, strngly suggest the owner was not very careful to have the mechanical components maintained either.
