I seem to have found the problem:
On the passenger side, the connector (looks rather like a press-stud) seems to have broken off, flush with the glass, leaving the rest hanging on its wire from the hole in the headlining. Must have had a knock during un/loading some time - it does seem a rather vulnerable construction.
On the driver side, there is no wire and connector, just the bit fixed to the window. This could however be normal, since the diversity arrangement is not standard for all markets.
So all I need is some kind of conductive adhesive to glue the fixed part of the connector back on the pad.
(I don't think soldering would be advisable on the glass base.)
I'm sure the Saab dealer would have a proper solution, but that would probably involve a new window... ;-(
I really should have tested the radio when I took the car for a spin before buying it, but I was more interested in listening to the engine etc.
Private sale, so no guarantee, but hey, that's life...
