Having worked at a Saab/VW dealer several years ago, I agree. There was a big difference between the expectations of the "base" Saab and VW owners. And, now that I have owned both cars, presently a 9-5, it's clear to me which group I fall into!
I recall one customer who still brought her early-80's 900 to the dealer (it had over 200K on it) and she took the time to write a letter to the dealership GM and to Saab raving about the car and our customer service. There are always exceptions to such generalizations, though.
I recall another customer who had a 9-5 Aero wagon. She had twin boys and two car seats in the back seat. We always washed and vacummed the cars after any service, but she was so mad that we didn't clean underneath the car seats! When I removed them, I saw the most disgusting mess I've ever seen in an upscale car--unbelievable! The leather was probably ruined, and she expected us to clean up after her kids.
