3 months ago I putchased a 2000 lpt sedan from a Houston dealer that had 62k miles and a one owner clear carfax report. It seemed like a nice car, and I had it looked at by a non-saab mechanic who said beyond a leaky valve cover gasket it was in good shape.
Two days later, it started smoking, tripped the TCS, and failed to start intermittently. Having just moved here, I didn't know any good mechanics, but someone mentioned a place that mostly works on volvos. They supposedly checked the compression, and said it wasn't a headgasket. they then replaced the vacuum pump and the PCV6 for just under 2k, which seems pretty rich even by CA and WA standards...
I picked the car up. Car had no power. Was told because there was lots of oil in the intercooler and such- would take days to clear out. Oil light flickering at stop lights, oil leaking in engine compartment. TCS still a problem. drove the car for a day and a half, and the turbo puked (was told the turbo was good) but the shaft nearly broke in half.
So I took it back to the same shop (name redacted to protect the guilty) and had the damn thing replaced. When I went to pick up the car they had an oil pressure gauage on it and said the pressure was low at idle, but not above 3k rpm. Also found at this time was a broken window motor, ac inop, and they 'suspected' the catalytic converter would fail soon due to the 6 quarts of oil that went through it (gee, ya think?) Another $1500
The car now has just under 65k miles, and the oil light occasionally flickers, the windows still don't work. Both the catalytic converters failed and were replaced. The car is so gutless, even with the sport button on, you can floor it and count to 10 before it hits 35- I am not exagerating. Even my friend's 250k mile non turbo, auto, 900s is peppier.
I've had classic 900's, three 9000's, and still have a pair of 9-3's, and never ever had problems like this before. I know there are people here that have 9-5s with over 200k on them, but don't you think at under 70k this is outrageous? I'm positive that this mechanic either scammed me on purpose, or put a drunk on the job because they didn't even put the car back together right each time (MAF on backwards, missing nut on turbo flange, pump nuts loose and leaking, and they missed a disconnected vaccum hose on the TCS body) At least it wasn't the dealer that went out of business along with $280 of parts I still haven't gotten...
I wasn't buried in this car in the beginning, but I am now and I'm afraid to even drive it now. Not that I want to, its such a dissapointing lemon. I always thought I wanted a 9-5, and even after two 9000 aeros and a 300k mile 900cv, I wasn't afraid of something new...
