For what it's worth, I was in a pinch several months back. During a long trip, I noticed my front pads starting squeak. Once I got home, I inspected them and they were shot. I needed to travel again the next day, so my only option was an Advanced Auto Parts. The only thing they had in stock were two different sets of pads. Cheap $25 pads and "premium" pads for around $75. I opted for the cheaper pads, since my rotors needed replaced (they didn't have any rotors in stock) and I needed to get the car on the road. It made more sense to me to let the rotors eat up a cheap set of pads and fix it properly when I had the time.
Those cheap pads have been on the car for about 5,000 miles. They stop better than the old pads ever did and produce almost no brake dust. I bought the car used, but I have all of the original owner's records. I can't find any evidence of the pads ever being replaced before, so I assume they were OEM.
I'll probably be replacing my pads and rotors this weekend, after bragging about my "thrifty while in a pinch" story, but I just thought I'd share.
When it comes time to fix them properly, I'm certain I'll follow the recommendations from this site. Y'all have yet to let me down.
