Frank, we just went from a '99 9-5 to a 2001 Aero, so have some insights. But as you're seeing here people think the 2002 is "much" improved over the 2001 - so keep that in mind.

I loved my '99. Great car, no major problems beyond the ECU replacement. Our buyout would have been around $20K, although there are a lot of them on the market, so we could probably have got the price down quite a bit. We went for the 2001 Aero for a number of reasons:

1. price - when we looked in November we were able to get ~8K off the price (paid about $34 for it), which is hard to resist

2. power - I always believed the '99 had enough power. Would have liked to upgrade it from 170 hp to 200, but it appears that that's not going to be easy to do (at least in the States). The Aero, on the other hand, is one heck of a machine. When I need extra power in traffic it's there. It moves when I need it to. Given most of my driving is on highways I've appreciated the extra boost when that truck is bearing down on us.

3. Suspension - a much tighter ride

4. TCS - didn't think this would matter much, but we've had it engage a number of times on rainy or icy roads, and it's amazing. Keeps the car going straight. This alone has made my wife think the investment was well worth it.

5. wear and tear - the '99 performed well, but I was noticing that little things were starting to happen. It had problems and wouldn't start a few weeks back, had to get towed to the dealer. Random other little things needed tending to (all typical of a car with 50K miles, I'm sure), but this was a factor.

We're happy with our decision, but I suspect we'd have been happy keeping the '99 too. Either way, you can't really go wrong!
