Actually, it started out as "DI Cassette", in Saab-speak, "DI" being an abbreviation for "Direct Ignition", as embossed on the unit itself.
Then it got shortened to DIC, then IDM came along with OBD II, because now everyone must call their parts by a common name which was approved by a committee someplace. Maybe the SAE, or something.
So, while "DIC" refers to specifically Saab's 4 cyl and 6 cyl multiple coil units, "IDM" might refer to that, and the coil pack on a Ford V8 or Cadillac, or Volvo, etc.
Air Mass Meter became "MAF" for Mass Air Flow abd "Check Engine" light became "MIL" for Malfunction Indicator Lamp for the same reasons. And then there's CHMSL...
Probably an old-timer Saab wrench would use "DIC", while a more "generic" shop would use "IDM"...
