PCV and lean mixture

My '01 Aero just bit the dust and my engine re-builder says it looks like lean combustion could be the culprit. As I was pulling the motor I found that the PCV (original PCV system) hose to the crank case had popped off, probably from an over-pressure situation. As it was dying the only code in the computer was P0101. My question is if anyone thinks the extra air sucked through that hose could be enough to cause my engine to die. I'm trying to figure this out so that my re-built motor doesn't suffer the same fate.
