AC stalls engine

I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction about what my likely problem is. I have a 99 2.3 LPT with 106k on it. If I try to start it with the Air Conditioning turned on, the engine will briefly try to start, make a minor racket then stall. If I have the AC turned off when I start the car, it runs and drives just fine until I turn the AC on, then it makes a racket and stalls out. Lately the AC has been slowly leaking freon and not getting as cold as it should. It seems like some AC component is failing and causing the engine to die, but I don't know what it is. Any help is appreciated....
