pcv #6 - necessary to replace oil trap??

I installed the pcv updates the other day on my 1999 9-5. The only tricky/time-consuming part was changing out the oil trap. But when I pulled the old one out it looked identicle to the new one. If I'm not mistaken, it's nothing more than a box that allows the oil droplets to collect and drain back to the oil pan.
Is it even necessary to change it? I've already done it but maybe the next person could just skip that part!?! (Changing the hoses only took about 20 minutes.)
